Exercising on an Empty Stomach
by Peg Jordan, RN
Q.
What advice do you have regarding exercising on an empty stomach -- for instance, the first thing in the morning?
A.
I was intrigued by a researcher who really pushed exercising first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. He felt that it was the best possible way to tap into fat stores and burn them up. His reasoning went like this: If you eat a big breakfast and then exercise, you will only burn up carbs and glycogen (sugar stored in the muscles) from your morning meal. If you don't eat a big breakfast, you have limited amounts of glycogen, and therefore you have to tap into fat stores for energy during your morning exercise.
The problem I have with this reasoning is this: After the body has gone through an eight-hour sleep period with no food intake, the level of sugar in the blood is low. But glycogen is not necessarily low. Glycogen is stored over a cycle of 24-48 hours, and it is not bottomed out by eight hours of rest.
Still and all, this fat-burning expert says his clients get the best results with his exercise in the morning routine, on an empty stomach. I know this much: you'll be hungrier than blazes in a few hours, and you'll have to watch out that you don't overeat then and put on more calories than you would have had you eaten a modest breakfast and exercised. Something about skipping meals always boomerangs into an overeating cycle for
